Ransomware Group Members Arrested | Neuways – Technologist
Ransomware group members arrested – In a significant breakthrough in the fight against cyber criminals, four individuals connected to the notorious LockBit ransomware gang (who have been targeting healthcare companies recently) have been arrested as part of an international operation. This effort, led by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), highlights the ongoing commitment of law enforcement agencies to combatting the increasing threat of ransomware in a relief for business owners.
Multiple Ransomware gangs involved
The arrests spanned multiple countries. French authorities apprehended a suspected LockBit developer, while British authorities detained two individuals believed to be supporting LockBit affiliates. In Spain, another key arrest was made—an alleged administrator of LockBit’s bulletproof hosting service. These developments mark the third phase of Operation Cronos, a task force targeting LockBit since April 2022.
Disrupting Ransomware activities
The recent arrests are the latest in a series of actions designed to dismantle LockBit’s operations. Earlier in 2024, massive disruptions to LockBit’s infrastructure were carried out, followed by sanctions and operational measures targeting the group’s administrators. The coordinated effort from law enforcement agencies in 12 countries has significantly hampered LockBit’s ability to conduct ransomware attacks, delivering a critical blow to the gang’s operations.
Ties to another Cyber Crime gang
In a related development, authorities also uncovered strong connections between LockBit and another notorious cybercrime group—Evil Corp. The NCA identified a high-ranking member of Evil Corp as a key LockBit affiliate. The suspect, who has targeted over 60 victims, is considered the “second in command” of Evil Corp, a position that places him close to the group’s leader.
The NCA’s findings expose how the arrested suspect has acted as a bridge between the two cybercrime groups, facilitating ransomware attacks across several countries. His involvement has led to sanctions from both the UK and US governments. In addition, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) recently unsealed an indictment against the suspect, charging him with deploying the BitPaymer ransomware to infiltrate systems, steal sensitive data, and demand ransom payments.
A Global Effort to Combat Cybercrime
Both groups’ activities are part of a broader pattern of cybercrime that has spanned several years, with victims ranging from businesses to government agencies. The coordinated efforts between international law enforcement agencies and the imposition of sanctions reflect a growing recognition of the global nature of the cybercrime threat.
Why it matters that Ransomware Group Members have been arrested
This latest success demonstrates that, while cybercriminals may attempt to evade justice, global cooperation and cutting-edge cyber security measures are making it increasingly difficult for them to operate unchecked. The message from crime bodies is clear: ransomware groups like LockBit will face repercussions for their crimes, and the fight against cybercrime is more robust than ever.
