Inside Sabrina Carpenter’s pop-infused dollhouse – Technologist
In slinky black underwear, Sabrina Carpenter lingered in a bathroom set up on stage at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. Beneath a heart-shaped mirror, without taking off her lace leotard, the singer sat on the toilet bowl and sang “Sharpest Tool.” Did that scene inspire anyone else in the 18,000-strong crowd that night? At the start of the show, a fan had removed her underwear and urinated on the floor – presumably for fear of losing her place close to the stage. There are better ways to mark your territory: As soon as security was alerted, they escorted the offender out, in front of the stunned crowd.
Shortly afterward, someone named Kyle found himself the target of a different kind of intervention. “You’re under arrest for being too hot!” the pop star exclaimed, while the giant screen displayed the baby-faced young man. Carpenter then tenderly handed him a pair of candy-pink handcuffs, before resuming her performance to rapturous applause. As for Kyle, he found it all the more difficult to contain his emotion as he was one of the few male spectators. Around him, most of the crowd wore white ribbons in their hair, the signature accessory of the “Carpenters,” as the diva’s fans are nicknamed.
On November 9, one might have feared that the mood would be less than party-like, following Kamala Harris’s defeat four days earlier in the US presidential election. After all, hadn’t the Democrat garnered her strongest support among the very demographic Carpenter appeals to most – young urban women? And didn’t she start her political career right here in the San Francisco Bay Area? Although Carpenter did not explicitly endorse the candidate, she had encouraged over 35,000 people to register to vote through the HeadCount platform, shattering its previous records.
Judging by her cheerful, playful expression, the American seemed to have turned her attention to another piece of news announced the day before the concert. With six nominations in the Grammy Awards’ top categories – which every winter celebrates the champions of the music industry – she is second only to Beyoncé, who is untouchable in this field. She also stands shoulder to shoulder with Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and Taylor Swift, the three singers with whom she has shared the top spots on the international charts since spring.
A taste for sequins
This sudden fame is due to a handful of hits, “Espresso,” “Please Please Please” and “Taste,” taken from her sixth album, Short n’ Sweet, released at the end of August. The album lends its name to her tour, the Short n’ Sweet Tour, which will make its way to Paris on March 16 and 17, 2025.
