How Amex Protects Authorized Users – Forbes Advisor – Technologist
That said, there are a few things you may want to put in place before adding a user to your credit card account.
Set Up Spending Limits for Your Authorized User
American Express gives you a little extra control of the additional cards tied to your account. You can set spending limits for each additional card. This can be an especially useful tool for people new to credit who may feel that card spending is abstract and hard to manage. However, you will need to call the number on the back of your card to set those limits or change the amount.
Create a Payment Plan
Depending on how intertwined your expenses are—this may be unnecessary for a spouse or partner—it could be wise to establish a payment plan. If you’ve added your children to teach them responsible credit usage or help them build credit, setting payment due dates can add some accountability.
Discuss a specific due date and the means of payment—cash, Venmo, Zelle—before you add someone to your account.
Establish Expectations for Rewards, Benefits and Annual Fees
While the primary goal may be to help a friend or family member build credit, you’re likely earning rewards. Depending on the specific Amex card you hold, you may also qualify for statement credits. Establish a plan for how rewards will be divided, how credits will be shared and any responsibility the additional user has to cover the annual fee.
If you carry the American Express® Gold Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees), it has a $325 annual fee and comes with a number of statement credits, including Uber Cash, Dunkin’ credits and dining credits for select restaurants with enrollment. You might assume that if you cover the annual fee, all the rewards and benefits are yours, but take the time to spell it out. Similarly, if you want to split the annual fee, make sure that discussion happens before adding a user. Sharing finances can be stressful, so take the guesswork out anywhere you can.
Know How To Remove an Authorized User
Due to the risk, make sure you know how to remove an authorized user if the need arises. American Express allows you to manage your authorized users through your online account using the Account Manager feature.
