Andy Levy teaches a plenary session at the Maryland Legal Services Corporation Access to Counsel in Evictions (ACE) Symposium. – Technologist

Andy Levy, founding partner of Brown, Goldstein & Levy, joined the Maryland Legal Services Corporation (MLSC) to teach a plenary session at its Access to Counsel in Evictions (ACE) Symposium on Sept. 26. The ACE Symposium brings together attorneys from various legal organizations doing eviction prevention work in Maryland, with the goal of training volunteer attorneys who are providing pro bono services to tenants facing eviction. The symposium is co-sponsored by MLSC, the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.

Andy’s presentation focused on the authentication of social media and impeaching witness credibility under the Maryland Rules of Evidence. Andy is widely regarded as one of the state’s premier trial and appellate lawyers, equally comfortable in civil and criminal courtrooms, before a jury, judge, or arbitrator. His practice includes most kinds of civil and criminal litigation, but some of the work of which he is most proud is his advocacy for fair housing. Many of his most impactful cases intersect fair housing and disability rights, as he has acted as counsel in efforts to establish group homes for persons with disabilities in the face of active community resistance.

ADL circle frameAndy is also a seasoned lecturer. He is a long-time member of the University of Maryland School of Law’s adjunct faculty, teaching a courseload as diverse as his law practice: Torts, Criminal Law, Evidence, Civil Procedure, Trial Practice, and Appellate Advocacy. Andy has been voted Outstanding Adjunct Teacher of the Year three times for his teaching work.

The ACE Program was created by the Maryland General Assembly in 2021 to provide access to legal representation in eviction and subsidy termination cases for eligible tenants. The program’s mission aligns with both Andy’s and BGL’s fight to provide fair, accessible and affordable representation to individuals facing eviction or other forms of housing discrimination. BGL attorneys have won precedent-setting fair housing cases for nearly four decades, challenging all forms of housing discrimination and representing both individuals and organizations focused on ending unfair housing practices. As a firm committed to the pursuit of social justice and equity, maintaining a robust pro bono practice – in housing cases and others – is one way that we are closing the gap between those who can afford a lawyer and those who cannot
